Lance is using a video camera to look at the inside of the chimney, the only way to see the true condition inside. One has to know what one is looking at and compare that to the codes and standards, and apply some judgement.
Sometimes there is damage at the top of the chimney which would require a partial demo and rebuild of the chimney, but for whatever reason it is not desired to do the rebuild. We can brick closed the fireplace opening so it can’t be mistaken for a functional fireplace. In the future, if someone wants to complete the rebuild process and end up with a safe, functional system, we can remove these bricks in the fireplace opening and one still has the original brick fireplace ready to go.
A rebuild in progress. The hollow “Chimney Chase” structure (which encloses the new metal flue pipes) has been covered with “lath and paper” and is ready to be covered with stucco. Then it gets a metal “chase cover” on top.
This is a sort of a shroud and a cap all in one. For a prefab system. These are often restrictive. The openings don’t allow for good “breathing” of the system. Hard to get the smoke out of the top, so it forces smoke out of the fireplace into the room.
We can do shrouds in regular steel, stainless steel, or copper.
A copper spark arrester cap.
A stainless steel cap and a copper chase cover. Cover will hold up even better near the ocean, compared to stainless steel. More expensive than stainless steel. Stainless is more expensive compared to regular galvanized steel.
This is a heat reflector, which is a thick piece of steel placed against the back wall. Is supposed to reflect more heat into the room and it helps protect the back wall from some of the heat from the fire.
Two new stainless steel caps, and a stainless steel chase cover. Should last a long time. Will for sure hold up better close to the ocean where rust is more of a problem.
New spark arrester cap and top damper, plus the concrete crown was painted with a 10-year sealer.
We can install gas logs with fake embers. Instant on, instant off, less cleaning compared to burning wood.

New cap and it has a top damper installed inside the cap. The concrete crown has been painted with a 10-year sealer.
New stainless steel cap. With these outdoor patio fireplaces one should try to keep trees and shrubbery away from the top of the chimney. The fire department likes a ten foot clearance.
New spark arrester cap and a concrete crown painted with a sealer. The sealer is rated at 10 years.
We can install concrete spheres if you like.
A chimney rebuild nearing the end of the construction.

Looks like it has a spark arrester cap beneath the “roof.” Doesn’t allow removal of the cap for cleanings and inspections.
Might look cool from a certain angle, but the vertical walls on three sides of the cap will restrict the flow of smoke out of the cap.
Right on the beach. Sooner of later rust wins out. This cap will continue to disintegrate. Should be replaced with a stainless steel cap, which hold up a lot longer than regular steel.
At least one crack and a couple/few gaps. Looks like either we demoed some bricks at the top of the bricks had already fallen out. If no loose bricks we can grind out the cracks and gaps and fill with mortar and then paint those areas with a black, hi-temp paint, to match the existing soot-stained look of the rest of the walls. If too many loose bricks, then we would have to demo the whole back wall and rebuild it.
